Pillar Arts Proudly Supports Godzilla Weekend at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater

| We are excited to share that Mayor Kerry Thomson has declared June 27, 2025, as Godzilla Day in Bloomington, Indiana! Pillar Arts is proud to support Godzilla Weekend at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater from June 27-June 29, presented in partnership with the Japan-America Society of Indiana and Indiana University’s East Asian Studies Center.
The event kicks off on Friday, June 27, with a special screening of the original 1954 Japanese film Godzilla (a.k.a. Gojira), widely regarded as the film that started it all. More than just a monster movie, Godzilla is a powerful reflection on post-war Japan’s cultural trauma and fears surrounding nuclear technology. The film was directed by Ishiro Honda, produced by Toho Co, Ltd, and its release marked a defining piece of cinema history. Screening Schedule at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater:
Audiences are welcome to a pre-film introduction and post-screening Q&A with Godzilla historian and scholar Beth Bredlau, a graduate student in the IU Department of Art History. Bredlau will offer insights into the film’s historical context, symbolism, and the cultural legacy of the Godzilla franchise, which has grown to include nearly thirty sequels and global recognition. Pillar Arts is honored to support this event recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Godzilla and its impact on international film. By partnering with local and academic organizations, we’re proud to help bring a classic of Japanese cinema to Bloomington and spark thoughtful conversation about its artistic and historical context.
